Pet Pjs Recovery Suit FAQ: All About Our Recovery Solutions

At Pet Pjs, we know that a pet’s recovery journey is more than physical healing — it’s about comfort, peace of mind, and keeping life as normal as possible for both pets and their families. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about our recovery suits, designed to help you feel supported at every step.

1.About Pet Pjs Recovery Suits

Pet Pjs are specially designed recovery suits that gently replace or complement the traditional e-collar (“cone of shame”). They provide protection for surgical incisions, wounds, hot spots, or skin conditions, while giving pets more freedom and comfort. They are used immediately after surgery, during wound healing, or anytime your veterinarian recommends additional protection.

Unlike e-collars that restrict your pet’s vision and movement, Pet Pjs allow your pet to rest, eat, sleep, and walk without stress. They protect the affected area while letting your pet stay close to you, cuddle, and enjoy a more natural recovery. In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend using both together for extra protection.

Not exactly. Pet Pjs are designed primarily as a recovery garment to protect surgical incisions, wounds, or skin conditions. However, in some patients, we have observed that wearing Pet Pjs also helped them feel calmer and less stressed — similar to the effect some pets experience with a Thundershirt. Every pet is unique, so we recommend discussing this possibility with your veterinarian to see if it could be beneficial for your companion.

2.Sizing & Fit

The only information you need to know is your pet’s weight. Either in pounds or kilograms. That will determine the best fit for the chest and abdomen. Because dogs and cats come in many shapes, maybe the suit will have sleeves that are too long for your pet, but that is ok, just roll them up or cut them off at the correct length. The suit will not fall apart and will still look good!

The size chart is based on weight alone, but you can find some common breeds for each size.

If your pet is between sizes, and he/she is on the skinny side, choose the smaller size. If they are on the heavier side, choose one size over. For example, if you dog is a lean or deep chested 22lbs, choose a Medium #1, if they are a little over their ideal weight, and have a wider waist line

Pet Pjs should be snug but not restrictive. It was designed to be adjustable to different body shapes. It’s not meant to be snug in all dogs. Make sure the body fits well (it does not need to be snug, but should not be too tight – please choose a larger size if it is too tight).Make sure the neck is not too tight: slide too fingers under the suit’s neck to check, if unable to do so, loosen the Velcro a little bit. If your dog is deep chested (small waist line), use the adjustable waist elastic and button it to where it seems fits your dog the best). Finally roll up the legs so only their paw is sticking out. If you choose to cut it shorter, make the measurement, remove the suit before cutting: do not cut any parts of the garment while your pet is wearing it as it could pose a risk of injuring your pet.

3.Use & Duration

That depends on the type of surgery:

  • Spay/neuter: usually 10–14 days
  • Most surgeries: often 10 – 14 days
  • Complicated surgeries with larger incisions: usually 3 – 4 weeks
  • Skin conditions/hot spots: as directed by your vet

These are only guidelines and not intended to substitute your veterinarian’s recommendations. Always follow your veterinarian’s recommendation — every case is different.

When the incision is closed, dry, with no swelling or discharge, and your veterinarian gives approval. If you see redness, odor, or your pet seems uncomfortable, contact your vet right away.

Every pet is different, if your pet is chewing on the suit, do not leave it unattended wearing only Pet Pjs. Some pets need to wear an e-collar when not supervised directly, follow your veterinarians recommendation. If you are unsure, it is safer to put an e-collar for precaution. If your pet does rip, chew and destroy the suit, they are not only at risk of getting into their incision, but also of ingesting parts of the suit and having a foreign body, for which they would potentially require surgery.

Yes! Pet Pjs are designed to be worn 24/7, including at night. Just check daily that the fabric is dry and clean.

4.Bathroom & Daily Life

Pet Pjs are designed with adjustable openings to allow safe bathroom breaks. For males, there is a designated area that should be cut: you can either cut through the seam or cut anywhere inside the circle to expose the penis. Do not cut while your pet is wearing the suit or you could injure them. Once the penis is exposed and the waist is adjusted, they can go potty without any problem. If urine gets on any part of the garment, remove and wash, as urine can cause inflammation to the skin. For females, find the special are over her vulva  and cut it off. Do not cut while your pet is wearing the suit or you could injure them. If in doubt, go to the “Instructions” part of the website for pictures and more thorough instructions.
